Competence relates to a persons ability to do their job and lead others. People rate a leaders 'Competence' by judging Intelligence, Capability and Authority. They will consider your qualifications and experience; how well you know the industry; how well you know the business; your perceived intelligence; appearance; your track record in leading people and getting results.

Trustworthiness refers to a person's ability to gain the confidence of others to 'do what's right'. People will rate a leaders 'Trustworthiness' by judging Professionalism, Honesty and Reliability. They will consider your integrity (do you do what you say you will do); by whether you follow and model company values; by how open and transparent you are with problems, issues and future developments; by whether you are authentic or just ‘act a part’, by how you behave at social events; by your manners (or lack of); by how you talk to and about others; by your language (e.g. polite vs swearing etc); and by how you react to criticism or bad news.
